That $40 billion, or whatever it turned out to be, returned far more to the U.S. economy in innovation. What would we do without Teflon, computers in our pockets, the Internet, numerous medical advances that extended lifespans, blah blah blah??? I suppose we might talk to each other instead of texting :-)
I have heard this point before many times before, verbatim. It must have been a news talking point, though this is the first time I've heard it said that the Apollo program is responsible for the internet. These technological innovations had almost nothing to do with the moon mission, and it's clearly a post-hoc rationalization of the Apollo program. They had to roll aluminum into thin sheets to get to the Moon? Incredible, I bet nobody would have brought that product to market had it not been developed for the Apollo program.
